«Kaspersky Lab»: «VKontakte» is the most dangerous social network for children

Within the «VKontakte» social network children can easily get access to the groups that contain pornographic images, video and other undesirable content.  

According to the head antivirus expert of the «Kaspersky Lab» Sergey Golovanov, within the «VKontakte» social network children can easily get access to the groups that contain pornographic images, video and other undesirable content.

Experts of the «Kaspersky Lab» have studies three Russian social networks: VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and MyWorld. During the week-long study experts have found out that to a child of 13 VKontakte, when word «porno» is searched, shows a list of limited access groups, but once the search is made using the synonyms of this word a child get a list of open access groups which contain information related to the search and can watch it freely.  In addition, a child is not protected from communications with pedophiles in the social network, he or she can experience psychological abuse and threats and come across fraud.

When word «porno» and its synonyms is searched within the Odnoklassniki social nework a child comes across a list of limited access groups that cannot be accessed. In this social network a child can only find erotic movies. Communications with pedophiles are minimal here and experts did not find any types of fraud.

Analysis of the MyWorld social network has revealed that pornographic content is either absent or very hard to access here. Within a week the experts have found out that pedophiles are not frequent guests in this social networks, while phishing and fraud were not discovered here at all.

«Wiliness of social networks is in the fact that they contain harmful content that exist on the Internet and additionally, it poses an extra threat to a child in the form fraud from “friends”, communications with strangers and potential contact with criminal», noted Mr. Golovanov.

According to Kaspersky Lab social networks pages from all over the world are visited by children more than 1.4 million times per day
