Symantec: harmful software pretends to be an antivirus update

Perpetrators have come up with the new way to infect users’ computers.

According to Symantec experts, the perpetrators have invented the new method of infecting their victims’ computers using social engineering tools. The creators of viruses send emails that pretend to be newsletters from a famous antivirus companies offering the latest update.

The message says that the attached file contains a very important security software update which has to be installed in order to protect the computer from a new harmful virus. The perpetrators try to fool the users who already came across the information about new dangerous viruses and who are anxious about safety.

«This type of social engineering persuades the user to install “the update” straightaway without thinking twice», – note the Symantec specialists.

The researchers also note that up to date they managed to find letter pretending to be from such antivirus developers as AntiVir Desktop, Avast Antivirus, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, Avira Desktop, Baidu Antivirus, Cloud Antivirus Firewall, ESET NOD32 Antivirus, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, McAfee Personal Firewall, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton 360, Symantec Endpoint Protection and Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security.
